GRUBSTAKES IS A SMASH

The first annual GRUBSTAKES Volleyball Tournament was served up on Saturday, June 21 and resulted in a smashing success. Fifteen teams, encourage by a bevy of vocal supporters, participated in a awesome day of competition, fun and festivity. All participating teams were treated to free Grubstakes T-shirts and fresh grilled hot dogs.

First Baptist of Milford overcame a late charge by Batavia Bulldogs to win the Championship Tournament. Midland’s Duck & Run wore Best Team Uniforms and were voted Best SportsmEn. Clermont Juvenile Court Ball Busters proved to be the Most Enthusiastic.

GRUBSTAKES is the class project of 2003 LEAD graduates Steve Stephens, Gary Bryant, Denise Nicholas, Dan Straub and Rob Fields. In true leadership fashion, classmates Cindy Hawk, Billy Durel, Berta Velilla, Terry Durrette and Chris Zimmerman pitched in to help.

Over $2,700 was raised for charity through team contributions, a raffle and the generous sponsorship of 3M Precision Lens, Steve Stephens, Douglas Donohoo, US Bank, ABS Business Products and Cancun Rayz Tanning. Trophies and T-shirts were prepared by Rapid Signs and Sportswear, sports drinks were donated by Tri-State Juice and news coverage was provided by columnist Laura VanHauten for The Community Press.
