Reality Store Experience - Eye Opener for HS Students

On Tuesday May 8, 2007 thirty high school students from Glen Este, Amelia, Williamsburg and Live Oaks Career Center traveled to UC Clermont College to participate in a Reality Store Experience Field Trip sponsored by Clermont 20/20, Inc. The students who took part in the field trip are enrolled in the High School Mentoring Program that is offered under the Clermont Educational Opportunities college access program. The purpose of this activity was to promote postsecondary education by getting the students onto a college campus and providing an interactive financial simulation of a life scenario. The Reality Store Experience assisted students in making responsible budgetary decisions involving housing, transportation, entertainment, child care, tax payments, grocery purchases, etc. In addition, the students received lunch, a campus tour and string backpacks from UC Clermont College. Several students commented that they really learned the importance of education and solidified their ideas of pursuing higher education after graduating from high school. Kate Gross, County Extension Educator for 4- H Youth Development, was instrumental in helping to facilitate the event with Clermont 20/20, Inc. and recruiting volunteers to assist with the Reality Store Experience.

Clermont 20/20, Inc. hopes to make this an annual event for the students participating in the mentoring program. If you are interested in getting more information about Clermont Educational Opportunities and the High School Mentoring Program please call Nancy Hall, CEO Program Manager or Terri Rechtin, Mentor Coordinator at 513-753-9222.

Litter Pickup Statistics

The statistics are in on the April 21st Clean and Green Spring Litter Pickup! 617 volunteers removed 985 bags of litter, 61 bags of recycling and a number of large items like tires and pallets. "The weather cooperated - we had a gorgeous day and a great turnout for the spring litter pickup. We had corporate teams from Duke Energy, TQL and CIMx that participated in addition to hundreds of residents and business owners. A BIG thank you to the following sponsors: 3M, Duke Energy, TQL, Kamphaus, Henning and Hood CPA, Meijer - Eastgate, Avalanche Ice, United Dairy Farmers, WalMart - Eastgate, Keebler, Mark Williams Beechmont Ford, Rivertowne IGA - New Richmond, Springdale Ice Cream and Beverage, Chiquita Brands International, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful and Adams-Clermont Solid Waste District." Becky Ploucha, Director of the Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program, adds.

Volunteers at the Computer Reuse/Recycling event held a Mark Williams Beechmont Ford collected almost 800 pieces of computer equipment and components that will be reused or recycled. Computer equipment and components contain toxins, like mercury and lead, which pose a tremendous threat to the environment. These toxins can be released into the environment when the components are incinerated or dumped into a landfill. The Clean and Green Program partnered with the Cincinnati Computer Cooperative (513-771-3262) on this initiative.
