Leaders View Clermont Economic Development
Wayne Baughman

The Midland Company recently hosted the Clermont 20/20 LEAD Clermont class during their Economic Development Day. LEAD class of 2008 class day planners, Mike Harp, Chyrl Larbes, Dave McNutt, and Mary Overberg arranged for the class to hear from township, Clermont County and regional economic developers during the day. Quinten Harris, Governor's Regional Representative for Economic Development; Andy Kuchta, Director, Clermont County Office of Economic Development; and Matt Van Sant, President, Clermont County Chamber of Commerce explained their roles and how they were working together to make Clermont County a better place to live. The class learned details pertaining to the I-275 and Route 32 interchange projected new configuration. Since there are six projects that will enhance Clermont County that this Clermont 20/20 class is working on, the team members heard from Mark Heitkamp, The Midland Company, as to how to manage their projects more effectively.

Before the class could learn about economic development, they needed to turn a large piece of paper over that they were standing on, without getting off the paper!

Historical Surprises for Clermont Youth
Wayne Baughman

Clermont youth attending the Clermont 20/20 Look to Clermont leadership program, recently learned that former Vice-President of the United States Aaron Burr, was held for a brief time in the Clermont County jail in Williamsburg on his way to stand trial for treason. They also learned that Harriett Beecher Stowe visited Batavia.

As part of the curriculum for the Clermont 20/20 Look to Clermont leadership program, 24 juniors and seniors representing 12 school districts in Clermont County, attended a day long historical tour through part of the county. Rick Crawford, noted historian of Clermont County, expertly described numerous facts about people and places, past and present. Olivia Enriquez, Batavia High School said, "I learned a ton of new things about Clermont County." Another student indicated that she found out that her grandmother's home had 17 slaves at one time staying there on their trip to freedom. Graham Rose from Bethel-Tate High School said, "I learned a lot of interesting facts about Clermont County history, like how much our county has been involved with presidents and wars." Finally, Desiree Lehn from Williamsburg High School indicated that "There were a lot of interesting facts and I couldn't believe how many historical things Clermont County has been involved in."

If you are interested in learning more about the Look to Clermont leadership program or Clermont 20/20, contact Wayne Baughman, Director, Leadership Development at 513-753-9222 or go to www.clermont2020.org.

Senior Leadership Become Versed on Local Health Initiatives
Wayne Baughman

While many people avoid hospitals, the participants in the Clermont 20/20 Senior leadership program, a program for retired and semi-retired persons in Clermont County, found Mercy Hospital- Clermont very interesting. One said of the hospital, "I would be more apt to come to Mercy Hospital- Clermont than before." Another indicated that they "Would recommend Mercy Hospital-Clermont." During the half day program, the group was given a tour of the hospital by Pete Gemmer, Director, Public Relations, and listened as Gayle Heintzelman, Interim CEO shared the accomplishments of the hospital and plans for the future.

Other presenters included, Karen Scherra, Executive Director, Clermont County Mental Health & Recovery Board, Tricia Burke, CEO, Clermont Counseling Center and Barbara Adams Marin, Communications Coordinator, Clermont Recovery Center. The participants were impressed with the agencies and how they work together to make Clermont County a better place to live and work.

If you would like more information of the Clermont 20/20 Senior Leadership program, contact Wayne Baughman, Director, Leadership Development at Clermont 20/20 at 513-753-9222 or www.clermont2020.org.

New Foreclosure Prevention Program

Spirit of America National Bank Teams with Clermont 20/20, Inc. and County Partners to launch a new Foreclosure Prevention Program. In a bold initiative to battle the increasing problem of foreclosures in our region, Spirit of America National Bank (SOANB) in Milford and the Clermont County Department of Planning have asked Clermont 20/20, Inc. to act as the lead organization in convening partners to join them and form the Clermont County Home Ownership Preservation Group.

Alarming statistics have led Spirit of America National Bank to support the counseling efforts of four non- profit agencies: The Better Housing League, Working in Neighborhoods, Smart Money Community Services and the Home Ownership Center, to save homes and educate families within our community. It was through this effort to save homes from foreclosure that have led to the formation of the Clermont County Home Ownership Preservation Group.

On October 19th, SOANB presented a check for $2000 earmarked to help bring the Freddie Mac "Don't Borrow Trouble Campaign" to Clermont County. For additional information on this exciting endeavor, contact India Davis, CRA Officer, SOANB at 513-576- 5349.

Higher Education is Within Your GRASP
Becky Ploucha

What is GRASP? GRASP is the name of the new Clermont 20/20 Clermont Educational Opportunities college access and success program created through grants from the Ohio College Access Network and the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. GRASP stands for Garnering Resources for Access and Success Partnership. The Partnership's goal is to align the work of college access organizations and higher education institutions to promote and support student access to, as well as success and completion of a degree. Partners include University of Cincinnati - Clermont College, Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, Great Oaks, Ohio College Tech Prep, Southwest Ohio Educational Opportunity Center, Clermont County Educational Service Center and Clermont 20/20. Our partners are diverse but all have the same goal - creating hope and opportunity for Clermont County students and adults to pursue education beyond high school.

Next steps are identifying a pilot school district based on their receptiveness to assistance and evidence- based need. The Partnership will create a 'roadmap' or 'web' of existing services, identify potential gaps and needs, and create a plan tailored to that district. In addition to the work being done at the school district level, work will be done within the community to ensure adults in that community are aware of their options regarding a post secondary education. A listing of services and resources will be provided through printed material, and, ultimately in a web- based interactive format.

For more information on the college access campuses throughout Clermont County, contact Becky Ploucha, the Coordinator of the Access and Success Partnership at grasp@clermont2020.org or call Clermont 20/20, Inc. at 513-753-9222.

Volunteers "Made a Difference"

137 volunteers worked on 5 different projects in Clermont County on Saturday, October 27th as part of the nationally recognized "Make a Difference Day". 2 communities unfortunately had to delay projects due to areas being to wet to install plant material.

"I would like to thank Keep Cincinnati Beautiful and H. J. Benkens Florist and Greenhouse for their generous donations of plant material for our projects. Thanks to them, 1,000 daffodil bulbs will be planted in public and community spaces for our residents to enjoy for decades to come!" stated Becky Ploucha, Director of the Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program.

Thanks to the following communities for their willingness to participate: Batavia Township, Felicity, Milford, New Richmond, Ohio Township, and Williamsburg. The "Welcome to Clermont County" sign will be landscaped by Master Gardeners from Hamilton and Clermont County as part of "Make a Difference Day".

Group of participants in Milford.

General Principles of Good Feedback
Feedback is always meant to be positive. Its goal is to improve the current situation or performance - its goal is never to criticize or offend.
  • Be descriptive rather than evaluative
  • Be specific instead of general
  • Solicit feedback rather than impose it
  • Time it
  • Focus on what can be changed
  • Check the feedback
  • Demonstrate caring

The Lion and the Mouse
A mouse ran across the head of a sleeping lion and woke him. With a quick swipe of his paw, the lion scooped up the mouse and roared his displeasure.
'Please don't eat me. I meant no harm,' the mouse squeaked. 'If you let me go, I'll repay your kindness someday.'
The idea of, so insignificant a creature ever being able to help the king of the beasts, so amused the lion that he good-naturedly let the mouse go.
Soon afterward, the lion went prowling for dinner and got caught in a hunter's net. Unable to move, the lion let out a roar of frustration. The mouse heard and recognized the lion's voice, and he scampered to aid the captured beast.
'Your Majesty,' the mouse politely said, 'let me now be of service to you.'
The mouse gnawed at the netting with his tiny teeth until he made a hole big enough for the lion to escape.

Community Events

Agenda 360 Wants Eastgate's Input

Clermont 20/20, Inc. is hosting a citizen engagement forum around Agenda 360, a project to develop a shared regional vision and action plan for the four counties of Southwest Ohio: Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren Counties. At the forum, citizens will share their ideas for creating a better region for their children and grandchildren.

Since the beginning of the year, a broad coalition of multi-generational community leaders have been at work building the early foundation for a shared civic agenda, an effort that has been co- chaired by Cincinnati USA Chamber President Ellen van der Horst, Myrtis Powell, Ph.D., retired from Miami University, and Kevin Ghassomian, an attorney with Greenbaum, Doll & McDonald.

Devised in similar fashion to Northern Kentucky's Vision 2015 - so the efforts will align and complement each other - Agenda 360 is being crafted to address five categories of work: Competitive Economy, Educational Excellence, Livable Communities, Urban Renaissance and Effective Governance. Five action teams have been formed to focus on the buckets, supported by support teams focused on Inclusion, Advocacy and Communications.

The Clermont County community forum is one of the first of twenty citizen dialogues held across Southwest Ohio where citizens will be challenged to be visionaries for the region. Citizens will be asked to identify what the region should aspire to, think of ways to get there, and identify which ideas have the most support.

The forum will take place in Eastgate is scheduled on Tuesday, November 27th, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at the Union Township Civic Center.

"This is our chance to influence the priorities of the entire region," said Cindy Jenkins, Executive Director of Clermont 2020 and member of the Agenda 360 Education Excellence Team. "We have to be at the table if we want our ideas and issues to be included."

For more information about Agenda 360 go to www.cincinnati360.com.

You are invited to join a group of committed civic, business and public leaders from Southwest Ohio to develop a shared agenda and action plan for our region. The Clermont County community is invited to provide its unique take on the plan.
