"The breadth of courses offered at UC Clermont is more than I was aware of", according to Alisa Poe of the Midland Company and member of the LEAD Clermont class of Clermont 20/20. "I did not understand school funding until this class" said Mike Schumaker of Focused Quality Solutions. "I now have a better appreciation of the education provided at UC Clermont." The LEAD Clermont class spent the day at UC Clermont learning about different facets of education including the "Ohio School Finance Dialogue" presented by Barbara Bradley, Superintendent, Batavia Local School District. This innovative grass roots public engagement discovery learning process has been developed to create a genuine understanding of the school funding issues in Ohio. The class also learned about Distance Learning from Sue Trakas, Associate Professor, UC Clermont and the progress of districts and schools using four measures of performance and the state and local report card system from Stan Laferty, Clermont County Educational Service Center. The day was rated very high by the LEAD Clermont leadership class, due in large part to the Education Day planning team comprised of Julie Graybill, Clermont Chamber of Commerce, Linda Pilon, Kamphaus, Henning & Hood and Mary Ellen Steele- Pierce, West Clermont Local School District. Nominations are currently being accepted for the LEAD Class 2009 which will begin in the fall of 2008. If you are interested in the nomination processes or more information about the program, please contact Wayne Baughman, Director, Leadership Development at 513-753-922 or www.clermont2020.org.

Were you aware that Clermont Senior Services delivers 500 meals each day in their Meals on Wheels program? Or that Clermont Services has a one- stop phone number (724-1255) that can put you in touch with a multitude of services they offer seniors? And did you know that the General Health District of Clermont County (732-7499) participates with the Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps which is a state funded program that helps families pay for needed medical testing and follow up treatment for children age birth to 21 years with special health care needs? These and other interesting facts about the health and human services programs of Clermont County were learned by the Senior Leadership program of Clermont 20/20. This program, designed for retired and semi-retired individuals of Clermont County, gives the participants a look at not only health and human services, but education, government and infrastructure, economic development and safety and justice during a year long program. Class members meet two half days a month to hear and see what is going on in Clermont County. If you are interested in the program and/or would like to receive more information about Senior Leadership, contact Wayne Baughman, 753-9222 or www.clermont2020.org.

Clermont 20/20, Inc. and its college access program, Clermont Educational Opportunities hosted a fundraiser on November 8th at Glen Este High School benefiting the Last Dollar Grant Scholarship Fund by bringing in the show basketball team, The Harlem Ambassadors for a great night of amazing basketball and family fun. The internationally-acclaimed Harlem Ambassadors took Glen Este High School by storm as they went up against the Clermont Crushers. From the moment the game began the audience was held captive with the show basketball team's high-flying slam dunks and hilarious comedy routines. Last year the fundraiser raised $6,000 for the scholarship fund. With the help of generous sponsors throughout Clermont County $25,000 was raised from the event this year. With a total of forty-two corporate, event and player sponsors for the fundraiser it will allow the program to expand its capability to award scholarships to high school students who graduate from high school and pursue a postsecondary education. Many thanks goes to our major event sponsor, The Miller Valentine Group and our major sponsors, The Midland Company, Duke Energy, the University of Cincinnati-Clermont College, International Paper and Kinker-Eveleigh Insurance. With their support along with the generous support of all of our corporate and player sponsors we have raised funds that will not only have an impact on the future of our students but it will impact our community's future, as a whole, by creating a stronger, well-educated workforce. Net proceeds from the event go, in their entirety, directly to Last Dollar Grant scholarships for students at participating high schools and career campuses in Clermont County. Clermont 20/20, Inc.: Clermont Educational Opportunities is a non-profit college access program that partners with Clermont County school districts and works with students and families to raise the awareness of postsecondary opportunities and encourage all citizens, youth AND adults, to pursue some form of higher education. For more information about the college access program contact Nancy Hall, Director, at 513-753-9222 or at ceop@clermont2020.org.

Williamsburg has been selected as the pilot site for the Clermont 20/20, Inc. College Access and Success Partnership GRASP project. Garnering Resources for Access and Success Partnership (GRASP) is a school and community based initiative whose mission is to "create a seamless communication network among existing secondary and post-secondary agencies and sources that focuses on student needs concerning access and successful transition from high school to higher education to the workplace". In addition to students at Williamsburg High School being more aware of their postsecondary educational opportunities, the adults in the community will be more aware of their options. Clermont 20/20, Inc. Executive Director, Cindy Jenkins, shared that this effort is the culmination of a planning process that includes the resources, intellectual equity, and dedication of area partners whose work focuses on making higher education accessible and a successful experience for students, especially those students who might not realize that the financial aid and scholarship opportunities exist to make their pathway to a career a reality. "Williamsburg has been an engaged partner in this effort, and we believe that the outcome will mean a real increase in the number of students pursuing and being successful in higher education. Thereby, creating a more skilled and educated workforce for Clermont County." "I would like to recognize and thank the Ohio College Access Network (OCAN) and the Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) for funding this initiative and giving the College Access and Success Partnership the opportunity to move forward with this initiative." added Becky Ploucha, Coordinator of the Access and Success Partnership. Everybody wins when you make a gift of appreciated stock to The Clermont Community Fund of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF). Your gift of stock is reinvested in your community, and it may qualify for two tax deductions based on the full fair market value of your appreciated stock. Here is how it works:
Summary of Benefits - By giving stock through The Clermont Community Fund of GCF, you can avoid paying capital gains taxes and deduct the amount of your gift from your federal income taxes. Establish a charitable fund that benefits the local causes and organizations you care about most. You can set up a scholarship; support special programs for at-risk youth, senior citizens, or other people in need; address environmental concerns; or support the arts. As with all tax issues, please consult your tax advisor or CPA on these matters. The Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program received a 2nd Place Great American Cleanup Project award at the November 15th Keep Cincinnati Beautiful "Just Desserts" event. The award was in recognition of the very successful Clean and Green Spring Litter Pickup that was held in April 2007. The purpose of the "Just Deserts" event is to recognize the work done by volunteers and communities in their effort to reduce or eliminate litter and to complete beautification projects. This year's event was sponsored by United Dairy Farmers and Heidelberg Distributing and hosted by H. J. Benken Florist and Greenhouse. "I would like to recognize and thank the 14 Clermont County community captains who worked very hard to ensure that the Spring Litter Pickup would be a big success this year: Mark Menz, Rex Parsons, Mike Shiverski, Nancy Middleton, Barb Hertzer, Susan Ellerhorst, Lynn Baird, Dan Stauft, Theresa Brown, Patti Bates, Mark McIlrath, Gene Williams, Wendy Smith and Connie Taggart. "We also partnered with Cincinnati Computer Cooperative to add the Computer Reuse/Recycling event to the Spring Litter Pickup, which made the event even more significant. 780 computer components were dropped off at the Computer Reuse/Recycling staging area at Mark Williams Beechmont Ford," added Ploucha. Ten Definitions of Leadership Warren Bennis: Leadership is about character... Managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing.
