Clermont Educational Opportunities Wildcat Reunion

Recently 14 college freshmen returned to their high school alma mater Williamsburg for a "Wildcat Reunion". And what a reunion it was! This was a unique opportunity for the returning freshmen to share their college experiences - the good and the bad! - with this year's Williamsburg High School graduating class.

According to Leonard Short, Williamsburg Middle/High School Guidance Counselor, "This was our third annual Wildcat Reunion. I am not sure who looks forward to it more, the graduates or the seniors. It is a great chance for seniors to learn what college is really about from someone other than their counselor. This year went very well thanks to Phil Saneholtz, Clermont 20/20 CEO Advisor, the Williamsburg PTA and all of the local businesses that stepped forward to provide prizes for returning graduates. Along with all of the scoop on dorm life and instructors, we were able to emphasize the important issues as well by giving prizes for most credit hours last term, fewest missed classes, etc. Though the graduates do not always say things exactly as I would like, this has become a very worthwhile educational experience. With the support of Clermont 20/20, the Williamsburg faculty, administration and community we hope to continue the Wildcat Reunion tradition."

"This event allows our seniors to go beyond the college brochures to capture what the true college experience is really about. We are always striving to increase the number of graduates going on to 2 or 4 year colleges, and I think this is yet another avenue for our current seniors to become more informed, and hopefully more excited, about the post secondary educational opportunities after leaving Williamsburg. I am grateful to the fourteen 2007 graduates who returned to WHS to share their first year college experiences, as well as to Len Short, Phil Saneholtz, Clermont 2020 GRASP and our PTA for making this event possible for our seniors." added Matt Earley, Williamsburg High School Principal.

The returning graduates were asked to share experiences about roommates, classes, activities and athletics, with the focus being the most important lessons that they have learned. In order for a Williamsburg senior to participate in the event they must have applied to at least one college. The program was moderated by Phil Saneholtz, Clermont 20/20 CEO Advisor. The originator of the "reunion" program is Margaret Thornton of Crawford College Connection.

Leadership Moments

How to Have a Positive Workplace

  • Manage attitudes to maintain optimism. Focus on the good things that happen, not the bad.
  • When bad things happen, stimulate a feeling of security by focusing on anything you can do to weather the storm or to improve the weather.
  • Recognize effort and focus on strengths.
  • Nurture a spirit of playfulness in yourself and your people. It turns problems into opportunities.

Intensify Your Curiosity

  • Try new things. Even if they don't work out, you'll learn lessons to apply elsewhere.
  • Seek out experts for their views.
  • Do your own research.
  • Seek alternative solutions, even when all is well. This gives you fallback positions.
  • Routinely seek opinions from people who have no experience with the subject.
  • Don't compartmentalize your life. This creates artificial barriers to brilliant solutions.
  • When you have a problem, work like a detective. Ask questions. Look at everything. Follow every lead.
  • Notice and eliminate assumptions. They're usually wrong.
  • Fire your inner critic. Give ideas time to percolate before assessing them.
  • "Browse" everywhere.
  • Explore new places and types of information.
  • Take different routes in your daily routine.
  • Ask questions of those you encounter: Find out what they do and what else they do.
