Computer Reuse/Recycling Event Added
A Computer Reuse/Recycling event has been added to the Clean and Green Spring Litter Pickup on Saturday, April 19. Computers can be dropped off at the Miami Township Service Department located at 5900 McPicken Drive between 9am and Noon. Please enter off of Meijer Drive, right next to the Dairy Queen. This is a great opportunity for any Clermont County resident or business to drop off a computer free of charge that they are no longer using. When possible, used computers are refurbished, the hard drives are erased and soft ware is reloaded. These computers then end up in schools, churches, not for profit organizations and families that ordinarily could not afford a computer. Computers that cannot be refurbished and reused are completely recycled and the hard drives crushed. Reusing or recycling computers prevents thousands of pounds of toxic electronic waste from going into our local landfills. Last year 20 percent of donated equipment was sold to schools, nonprofits, students and families for under $100 per computer. As a sponsor of "Crayons to Computers" complete computer systems are given to that organization. This event is organized by the Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program and the Cincinnati Computer Cooperative. Both organizations would like to thank the Miami Township elected officials and administration for graciously hosting this event.

Ohio River Sweep - Poster Contest Winner
  Saturday, June 21, 2008

Third grader Lauren Schmidt of New Richmond Exempted Village School District's Monroe Elementary has bested 3rd grade contestants from six states to win the Ohio River Sweep Poster Contest! The poster contest was held in schools bordering the Ohio River and its tributaries to create an awareness of the problem caused by litter in our rivers and streams. Students in primary and secondary schools (public, private and home schools, K - 12) were invited to design a poster for the 19th annual River Sweep to be held Saturday, June 21, 2008. Artwork was submitted in December and judged in January. Lauren was the only winner from Clermont County and the only 3rd grade winner in our region, which covers Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

This contest is a great method to increase awareness in schools and communities of the impact that debris has on our river and its tributaries. During the 2007 Clermont County Ohio River Sweep volunteers removed 1,176 bags of debris, 9 full sized refrigerators, 98 tires, 3 gas grills, 4 stoves and several pieces of exercise equipment from the Ohio River and its banks. Congratulations Lauren!

For more information about the June 21st Ohio River Sweep, please contact Becky Ploucha, Director of the Clean and Green Program, at cleanandgreen@clermont2020.org or 513-753- 9222 for additional information.

Leadership Moments

The Fox and the Cat

A fox boasted to a cat one day about how sly and wily he was. 'I've got all kinds of tricks,' the fox said. 'For example, whenever I hear the dogs coming, I know a hundred different ways to escape.'

The cat was impressed and humbly said, 'Your cleverness is amazing. As for me, I have only one way to escape, and that is to climb up a tree. I know it's not as exciting as all of your ways, but it works for me. Maybe someday you could show me some of your different escape routes.'

The fox smiled smugly. 'Well, friend, perhaps I'll have some free time one of these days, and I can show you a trick or two.'

Shortly afterward, the fox and the cat heard a pack of hounds baying nearby.

'They're coming this way!' the cat shrieked.

In a flash, she scaled a nearby tree and hid herself in the leaves. The fox stood there trying to decide which of his many tricks to use. Paralyzed with indecision, the fox waited too long to make his move, and the hounds pounced on him.
