Bringing Leadership From Our
Childhood |
| |
 |
Wayne E. Baughman Director,
Leadership
Development
When I was growing up, I had a number of books that
I loved my mother to read to me. As I grew up, I
read them to my children and now my grandchildren.
However, I never thought too much as to the connection
with many of them and leadership until the last few
years. Found this quote from the book "Goal
Setting: How to Create an Action Plan and Achieve Your
Goals" by S.B. Wilson and M.S.
Dobson. "Remember Alice in
Wonderland? At one point in the story, Alice stops
at the crossroads to ask the Cheshire Cat which road to
take. He responds by asking where she wants to
go. When she tells him that she 'doesn't much care
where,' he replies, 'then it doesn't matter which way
you go.' As a result, she wanders aimlessly in her
travels. Like Alice, we often travel the
road of life without a specific direction or goal.
Few of us make goal setting a priority. In fact,
studies have shown that most people either do not know
what they want from life or, if they do, have no plans
for realizing their dreams. Only a small percentage of
people have specific well-defined goals. And
people who most frequently reach their goals are those
who write them down and develop the plans to reach them
(Wilson & Dobson, 2008, p.3)." As some
of you know, I am a goal oriented person and believe
that one of the skills of an effective leader is not
only to have goals, but to write them down, look at them
each day and refine them from time-to-time. So,
are you a goal setter and if not, why not set a goal to
become one! |

Collecting Books for Senior Center
Libraries |
| |
 |
After visiting one of Clermont County's five senior
housing center, the participants in this year's
Clermont 20/20 LIVE (Learning - Involvement -
Volunteerism - Enthusiasm) Clermont leadership program
for retired and semi-retired persons, recognized the
need to supplement the resident's
libraries. The managers of each facility
asked residents about their interests and the types of
materials they would enjoy. After finding out the
preferences of the residents, the LIVE Clermont class
members have begun collecting books and games to donate
to the senior housing centers' libraries. The LIVE
Clermont program participants have set a goal of 150
books, some in large print. These will be
presented to the various senior centers in
April. |

Applications being accepted for teacher
and summer program grants
The Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) is now
accepting applications for its two Grants for Kids
programs, Learning Links and Summertime Kids, which
benefit thousands of children each year through grants
of up to $1,000 to schools and nonprofit organizations
for special projects. Grants for Kids enable educators
and nonprofit organizations to provide creative learning
experiences for children, and provide support for
schools with limited project budgets. In 2008, Grants
for Kids affected 44,000 children through a quarter of a
million dollars in grants. Learning
Links Education Grants
Learning Links was
created to provide small grants to teachers for special
projects that have a positive impact on any segment of
the school. Educators from schools in Butler, Clermont,
Hamilton and Warren counties in Ohio; Boone, Campbell
and Kenton counties in Kentucky; and Dearborn County,
Indiana may apply for Learning Links grants now for the
2009-2010 school year. Grants will be announced in
August and awarded in September
2009. Summertime Kids
Grants
The Summertime Kids program seeks to
provide school age youth with constructive, safe, fun,
and enriching summer activities. Nonprofit organizations
in all eight counties, Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and
Warren counties in Ohio; Boone, Campbell and Kenton
counties in Kentucky; and Dearborn County, Indiana, may
apply for Summertime Kids grants for projects that will
take place in the summer of this year. Grants will be
awarded in May 2009. Obtaining an
Application: Application forms may be downloaded from
GCF's Web site ( www.greatercincinnatifdn.org) or
requested by calling (513) 241-2880. Summertime Kids
grant applications are due March 25, 2009. Learning
Links applications are due May 1,
2009. |

Aligning Organizational Needs with Individual
Capabilities
Deming and Galileo capture precisely the double
bind that many organizations face. Learning is
compulsory, but it cannot be forced. Individual
leaders need to grow and develop, to deepen their skills
and their capabilities, and to extend the range of
situations they can address. And organizations
need them to do those things - not because organizations
are particularly enlightened, but because great
leadership is necessary.
Organizations cannot teach people to lead,
though they can and should provide the means through
which technique can be learned and practiced.
Organizations cannot compel individuals to strive for
eminence, but they can encourage and support aspiring
leaders to look inward and find the insights and the
distinctive perspective that could make them
great. Organizations should not provoke adversity,
but they do need to recognize the transformative
potential of crucible experiences and to provide the
resources people need to extract insight from them
(Thomas, 2008).

213-214). Crucibles of leadership: how to learn
from experience to become a great leader.

Five Ways to Love Your
Passengers
- Make Time for Them - You can't
nurture business relationships sitting at your desk,
just as you can't spend quality time with your spouse
if you are watching television. So the key is to come
out of your office and get to know the team. Spend
time with them. Meet with them individually. Get to
know them as people, not numbers.
- Listen to Them - One of the most
important factors that determines a high management
approval rating is whether the manager listens to
employees. Your employees and customers just want to
be heard, so listen to them and hear them. We're
talking about really sitting down and listening with
your heart and caring about what they have today.
Empathy is the key.
- Recognize Them - Honor them for
who they are and what they do. Recognize them as a
person as much as a business professional. Praise them
when they are doing things right.
- Serve Them - A great leader once
said, the higher you get in an organization the more
it is your duty to serve the people below you rather
than having the people serve you. The key is to serve
their growth, their future, their career, and their
spirits so they enjoy work. The more you serve their
growth the more they will help you grow.
- Bring Out the Best in Them - When
you love someone you want the best for them. You want
them to be successful and happy. The best way any
leader can demonstrate their love for their team is to
help each person discover their strengths and provide
an opportunity for the person to utilize them. When
you create a system that provides a way for your
people to shine you not only bring out the best in
them but in the rest of the team and company as well
(Gordon, 2007, p. 123-124).
