17th Annual Salute to Leaders

Our Salute to Leaders in 2010 is an extra special event because it also represents Clermont 20/20's 20th year of service to the Clermont community. From its very beginning, Clermont 20/20 has existed to bring the importance of leadership and citizenship to the people who live and work in Clermont County. By promoting civic engagement and developing individuals to think in a leadership perspective, Clermont County has expanded its capabilities to meet the ongoing challenges that confront every community in America.

For seventeen of the past twenty years, Salute to Leaders has been a way for Clermont County to take a moment and recognize citizens who have chosen to be a leader and contributed to the community. Salute is a time when we can say "thank you" to these individuals for making the commitment and serving others when they didn't have to.

Call for Nominations

Category descriptions and nomination forms are available on our web site at this address: www.clermont2020.org.

Now is the time for you to nominate local heroes and leaders in the Clermont County area.  Clermont 20/20, Inc. is calling for nominations for the 17th Annual Salute to Leaders Awards Ceremony.  Each year this event recognizes non-elected individuals and organization for their contributions to their communities and Clermont County.

People selected for the Salute to Leaders honor are chosen for their willingness to serve others, personal commitment to make a difference, and those who see their community as something bigger than themselves. Their commitment includes helping to build a stronger community for the generations who will follow them.

Please email your nomination to frankie.hughart@clermont2020.org or mail to Clermont 20/20, Inc. 1000 Ohio Pike, Suite 2, Cincinnati, Ohio 45245 or fax to 513-753-1225

You Can "Make a Difference" on October 24th

Join dozens of other volunteers to "make a difference" in Clermont County on Saturday, October 24th.  Partnering with Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, the Clermont 20/20 Clean and Green Program is busy organizing projects in several communities in Clermont County.

Currently there are five projects planned.
  1. Plant material will be installed around the "Welcome to Clermont County" sign located on the corner of SR 125 and SR 275.
  2. Susan Ellerhorst, City of Milford Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Department, is planning a litter pickup in Milford.
  3. Plant material will be installed around Batavia Township, Stonelick Township, and New Richmond buildings and signs.
  4. Renaissance New Richmond and the New Richmond Chamber of Commerce will install daylilies and daffodils around the riverfront Bandstand.
  5. Master Gardeners from both Clermont County and Hamilton County will be removing dead plant material from around the "Welcome to Clermont County" sign on the corner of SR 125 and SR 275 and then installing new plant material.
"We are recruiting volunteers for any and all projects.  We ask that volunteers dress for the weather and task that they will be completing.  Garbage bags, gloves, beverages, and plant material will be provided.  I would like to thank H.J Benkens Florist and Greenhouse for providing all of the daylilies and daffodils that will be planted.  These projects will have a lasting impact in the communities that are participating," stated Becky Ploucha, Director, Clean and Green Program.  For more information, contact Becky Ploucha at cleanandgreen@clermont2020.org or 513-753-9222.

Clermont 20/20 Cornhole Tournament Raises Scholarship Funds

So, how do you raise $14,000 for a scholarship fund and have a great time doing it? Clermont 20/20, Inc. pulled this off when we hosted our first ever "Cornhole Tournament" on September 11th at Taste of Clermont. Sixteen teams competed in the tournament with two teams walking away with $300 for first place and $150 for second.  Marty Poe and Chris Hall from Northern Kentucky held out to take first place with Gary Frances and Dustin Frances from Tarlton, Ohio taking home the prize for second place.  The money raised will allow us to once again award scholarships next May to graduating seniors throughout Clermont County who need help meeting the costs of attending college.

The Clermont Educational Opportunities program offers services that provide opportunities for students in Clermont County to pursue higher education.  Advisors work with seniors and their families to increase awareness of all postsecondary options, motivate and encourage students to pursue postsecondary education, and assist them with admissions and financial aid processes and scholarship searches. There is no cost to the students or families for these services.  If you would like information about our educational opportunities program, please contact Nancy Hall, Program Director at 513-753-9222 or ceop@clermont2020.org.

Marty Poe and Chris Hall participated in the Clermont 20/20 Cornhole Tournament on September 11th at Taste of Clermont and walked away with first place and $300.

Happy Birthday Scorpio!
Reputed to be the "most powerful" sign of the zodiac, Scorpios lead fate filled lives and have intense and dramatic personal relationships. Even as children, Scorpios are often found to be wise beyond their years. Many astrologers call this the sign of the "oldest souls". Old and wise beyond the average.

Increase in Suicides in Our County
According to LEAD Clermont Alumnus, Lee Ann Watson, Associate Director, Clermont County Mental Health & Recovery Board, "Clermont County's suicide rate is at 30.  The highest we have ever had is 34 for the year.  The increase is most likely tied to the economy." The County Mental Health & Recovery Board is trying to be proactive about the increase and is involved in educational efforts for area businesses that might be laying off about access to treatment and helping them learn how to deal with workers who are having mental health and/or substance abuse issues. If anyone is interested, Lee Ann can provide flyers, with The Clermont County Crisis Hotline number, to your businesses to post or give to HR.  The Clermont County Crisis Hotline is 513-528-SAVE.  For further information, please contact Lee Ann Watson, Associate Director, Clermont County Mental Health & Recovery Board 513-732-5406 office; 513-732-5414  fax; lwatson@ccmhrb.org.
