Update from Linda
Baughman . . . |
| |
 |
Many of you have asked us about Wayne
Baughman's wife and family. Recently we heard from Linda
Baughman and we thought we would share . .
.
Well, I'm not as overwhelmed as I was. Things seem
to be calming down a bit. Just a bit. I went to
California on September 19-26 to take Wayne's ashes to
Yosemite as he asked. Jim & Marilynn (friends from
FL) went with me. We started in San Francisco, then Napa
Valley, then Yosemite. Wayne is located in 4 places from
the Yosemite Valley south to the Giant Sequoia Forest.
He would love that! I brought some of him home in
case I ever get to Australia. He always wanted to go
there. This past weekend, I had Wayne's 45th class
reunion. He was organizing it and the letters had gone
out for classmates to send the money and reservation form to
him. He had made all the necessary arrangements and I
turned it all over to other classmates. I collected the
money and answered emails. Wayne asked me to attend even
if he wasn't able to go, so I did. You would have
thought I was a celebrity they way they treated me. It
turned out to be a nice event. After Yosemite and
the class reunion, I felt a huge sense of finality and
separation from Wayne. I actually got more out of being
involved in the reunion than the classmates did. It kept
me close to Wayne and I felt good about finishing something he
felt so passionately about. My final act for him will be
as assistant scout master for his den. Wayne's daughter,
Allison has taken over as den leader. The twins are in
their last year of cub scouts and Wayne's goal was to get them
through so they can join boy scouts if they want. The
boys will cross over to Boy Scouts in March. Wayne said
many times that he wanted to live to get the boys through to
Boy Scouts. I will finish that for him. The
house is still overwhelming with the yard work and housework,
but I'm trying not to worry about it. I can see why
people downsize and move to condos!!
Fondly, Linda

LEAD Clermont
Class of 2010 - Economic Development
Day |
| |
 |
 October 1st was Economic Development
Day for the LEAD Class hosted by The Midland Company in
Amelia. The day started with comments from Brad
Forsythe, owner of Best Practice Advisers LLC and the
facilitator for the Clermont CEO Roundtables at the
Clermont Chamber of Commerce. Class members got to hear
from Brad about what CEOs are saying on a range of
issues from the economy and workforce, to how they see
the road ahead. Brad also discussed some of the
leadership capacities CEOs are using to guide the
decisions they are making to keep their companies viable
and competitive in an ever-challenging
environment. Steve Wharton, President of
the Economic Development Corp. of Clermont County,
presented key strategies around building economic
prosperity and the ways it can be accomplished through
collaboration and partnership among stakeholders. Steve
discussed how economic issues, transportation,
workforce, targeted industry, education, and community
development are interrelated and how important it is for
people to get involved and contribute their talent and
skill to making Clermont County a great place to live
and work. Andy Kuchta,
Director of the Office of Economic Development for
Clermont County, and Matt Van Sant, President of the
Clermont Chamber of Commerce teamed up to present topics
about the future of economic development in Clermont
County and the region including County initiatives and
Agenda 360. They also presented on the site location
process and the key factors a company will consider to
determine the best possible location for their business.
Class members got a first-hand account of this from Anil
Bakshi, Tata Consultancy Services, who was a special
guest visitor to Economic Development Day and whose
company is now located in Park 50 in
Milford. John Melvin provided the class
with a view of small business development and that
sector's impact on the economy. John presented how the
flow of small business activity helps create jobs,
supports larger corporate activity, assists with
community building needs, and provides opportunity to
people who have the desire and interest to own their own
business. John's concept is based on an economic garden
that constantly needs to be cultivated and
harvested. Mark Heitkamp, Vice President of
The Midland Co., wrapped up the day with a presentation
on project management and the importance the process
plays in helping organizations identify key factors,
economic benefits, who's involved or needs to be
involved in the process, and ultimately what outcomes
should be expected from the project.
Overall evaluations from the class were
extremely positive about the presenters and the
knowledge they gained from these subject matter experts
about economic development.

What happens when you get together 26 juniors and
seniors from 12 school districts throughout Clermont
County, which for the most part do not know each other
and ask them to form teams? Well, anything can
happen. That is what the staff at Woodland Lakes
Christian Camp and Retreat Center, Amelia, faced in
September. However, under the expert guidance of
Tim Becker, Program Coordinator and his team, this group
was able to accomplish many feats during their daylong
program and began developing into a
team. The Clermont 20/20 Look to Clermont
class of 2010 is made up: Carly
Cark and Morgan Sperry from
Amelia High School, Cassie Ewing,
Ashleigh Grimes and Megan
McDonough from Batavia High School,
Morgan Brink and Danitra
Campbell from Bethel-Tate High School,
Ashley Gilkerson and Seth
Varner from Clermont Northeastern High School,
Loren Schutzius and Amanda
White from Felicity-Franklin High School,
Sara Chilewski and Josh

Natalie Siddique and Malia
Smolenski from Loveland High School,
Ashley Abbott and Shayla

Kody Blankenship and Kelli
Bosse from New Richmond High School
Rachel Meisberger from Williamsburg
High School. "I really enjoyed meeting new
people and learned quickly how to trust others", said
Ashleigh Grimes. Morgan Sperry shared, "I really
liked the team activities. It helped unite us and have
trust in each other. I also met some really cool
people." "The low ropes and tower were fun and
really enjoyed coming up with ideas for our community
projects", said Ashley Gilkerson. Seth Varner
indicated, "Doing the Spider Web trust activity in the
woods was his favorite along with the rock
climbing." Over the next several months,
the class of 2010 will learn about government and
infrastructure, education, safety and justice, health
and human services and economic development in Clermont
County. They will be also working on community
projects to benefit Clermont County and its residents.
Special "Thank You" to Brower Insurance
Agency, Center Bank, Goshen Lions Club, Milford Kiwanis,

Historical
Surprises for Clermont Look
Students |
|
|
 |
Clermont 20/20 Look to Clermont leadership program,
recently learned that General Ulysses S. Grant, 18th
President of the United States, was born in Point
Pleasant on April 27, 1822 and the his original
birthplace cabin is still standing and that former
Vice-President Aaron Burr, was held for a brief time in
the Clermont County jail in Williamsburg on his way to
stand trial for treason.
As part of the curriculum for the Clermont 20/20
Look to Clermont leadership program, students attended a
daylong historical tour through part of the
county. Rick Crawford, noted historian of Clermont
County, expertly described numerous facts about people
and places, past and present. The students shared a
rather chilly and wet lunch at Chilo Park but many
commented about how much they learned about Clermont
County and had a great time.
