A Message
from Chris Smith, Executive
Director |
Clermont 20/20 CEO Program provides valuable
guidance.
Clermont County is fortunate to have a wide array of
educational and instructional choices for our high school
seniors. One such choice is Clermont Educational Opportunities
(CEO), a major program under Clermont 20/20 that addresses the
needs of our high school students. This college access program
offers on-site advisor services at participating high schools
and career campuses. It provides a unique win-win-win
situation for our community. The first win is
for our graduating high school seniors who are able to meet
one-on-one with college access advisors during the school day
and discuss various topics, including career exploration,
academic counseling, postsecondary admissions, financial aid,
and scholarship searches. It is personalized time and
attention provided when these young adults and their parents
have a lot of questions and concerns about their next step(s)
in life and career. The second win accrues
to our fiscally challenged school districts. The CEO
program provides their senior population one-on-one guidance
time as they explore their career choices and educational
options while allowing the school district the opportunity to
more efficiently utilize what may be limited counseling
resources for other tasks. The third win
is for our business community which becomes the beneficiary of
a better educated, more highly skilled workforce. We are
losing too many of our young adults as they migrate to other
parts of the country for what they believe to be better
employment and living situations. The
impact of this modest investment in college access pays huge
dividends in the ultimate earning potential and purchasing
power of an individual. A better skilled, better educated
workforce is one of the primary paths to prosperity for our
community. The correlation between educational
attainment and annual income is striking!

Cornhole Tournament
Fundraiser - Friday, September 10,
2010 |
Clermont 20/20, Inc. is holding an amateur
cornhole tournament at 7 pm on Friday, September 10, 2010 at
Eastgate Mall. The fundraising event, held
during the annual Taste of Clermont, benefits the non-profit
organization's Last Dollar Grant Scholarship Fund. Now in its
ninth year, this fund awards scholarships to Clermont County
high school seniors who show financial need as well as a
commitment to pursuing higher education. This will be a
great way to kick off the Taste of Clermont event, enjoy some
great food, play some cornhole and support a worthwhile cause.
Cost for the tournament is $40 for a team of two with a
maximum of 40 teams. Prize money will be awarded to the
top four teams! Pre-registration is required by calling
513-753-9222 or at our website www.clermont2020.org.

Alumni Call to
Action! |
We are asking our Clermont 20/20 alum to give back to
their community and the organization in one of the following
ways:
- Serve as a mentor for one of this year's Leadership
class participants. The expectation is that you and the
individual LEAD class member will work out a scheduled time
and place to meet, get to know each other better, discuss
projects, class content, business challenges, public policy
matters, governance issues, and other items of mutual
interest. It is a great opportunity to make a new, valued,
and long term connection (and friend).
- Assist us with class day content and speakers based on
your particular expertise whether that is education,
economic development, government, infrastructure, health
care, human services, safety, or justice.
We want to tap into the sizeable network and intellectual
capital of our 400 (plus) alums. The commitment is modest. We
are asking for you to attend one meeting for assistance in the
preparation of class day content and make a couple phone calls
to line up appropriate guest speakers for that day's class
presentations. Thank you for your willingness to help
and lend your time and personal support to Clermont 20/20. It
is appreciated. Please contact Julie Graybill
(Lead Advisory Committee) at Julie.graybill@clermontchamber.com or
513-576-5013 to indicate your willingness to participate as a
class mentor or class program content contributor.

Leadership
Alumni News & Events |
As a graduate from a Clermont 20/20, Inc.
Leadership program, if you have an announcement you
would like to share please send your information to officemgr@clermont2020.org.
This effort is brought to you
by the LEAD Class of 2008.
Look to
Clermont Graduates - where are you now?
Many of you know
Rachel Richardson. Many of you read
her articles in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Did you know
that Rachel is one of Clermont 20/20's LOOK graduates?
We asked Rachel to recall and highlight that
experience for us. She was kind enough to provide the
following:
"I participated in the LOOK to
Clermont Leadership program in 1996-1997 during my
senior year of high school at Glen Este. Although I
had been raised in Clermont County most of my life,
the LOOK to Clermont provided an eye-opening look at
the county's history, its operations, and installed a
new appreciation of my home town and the need to give
something back. "Perhaps one of my most
poignant memories from LOOK to Clermont is the
historical tour we took. When I was in high school,
history classes were limited and none touched upon
local history. I was amazed to learn of the important
role that our county played in the Underground
Railroad and the influential people who were born and
lived here. I remain very much interested in local and
world history. I went on to earn my bachelor and
master's degrees in history from UC. While my graduate
research is a topic of broader context, I still remain
very much interested in Clermont County history and
the local history and events that shaped the community
I live in. "It is an interest that has
paired well with my career as a Communities Reporter
with the Cincinnati Enquirer. I joined the Enquirer in
2005 as a graphic designer and moved into a reporting
role the following year with the start up of Your
Hometown Enquirer. Our section focuses on local news.
I cover 18 communities on the eastside, eight of which
are in Clermont County. I am constantly amazed by the
interesting people I meet who are doing fascinating
and wonderful things. I feel privileged to be able to
record these stories and history for future
generations in Clermont
County." We are fortunate to
have had Rachel Richardson as a graduate of our
Clermont 20/20 program and wish her more success in
her exciting career
pursuits. |

Don't miss the 14th annual event. Proceeds will
benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Clermont
County. Runners and walkers of all ages enjoy the
scenic view of the Ohio River as the course takes them
down historic Front Street. The race course is "flat and
fast" and has age divisions for youth and adults. The
whole community helps make this event fun and memorable.
Local businesses such as Curves and Snappy Tomato donate
items for door prizes; Rivertown IGA contributes water
and items for breakfast. The New Richmond Police, Fire
and EMS Departments and the Village Street Department
helps with barricades to control traffic and man water
stops. Volunteers from all over the county help monitor
the course. For more information or to register, visit

GCF Clermont
Community Fund helps support Boys & Girls
Clubs |
 The Greater Cincinnati Foundation
(GCF) provided a $100,000 grant to The Boys & Girls
Clubs of Clermont County to help fund programs targeted
at Clermont County teens. "The Club Teen Center"
will be opening in New Richmond later this summer at the
Crossroads Community Center, and the programs will be
expanded to 20 hours each week. The facility is
just for teens through age 18, and it will have a
computer lab, an art and music room, a gymnasium and
areas to socialize.
This GCF grant joins funding from the Clermont
County Commissioners, the Crossroads Community Center,
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Clermont County and other
private sources.
"Teens in Clermont County are in desperate need of
activities and locations that are safe, positive and
age-appropriate," according to Clermont County Juvenile
Court Judge Stephanie Wyler, who is also a member of the
Corporate Board of Directors of The Boys & Girls
Clubs of Clermont County. "The Boys & Girls
Club Teen Center will be a safe haven for education,
enrichment, and healthy peer relationships for our
youth." | |
