A Message from Chris Smith, Executive Director
Chris Smith, Executive Director, Clermont 20/20, Inc.
LEAD Class of 2011, the best class, has begun. We have 23 bright and talented participants in this year's class. One of the most significant assets Clermont 20/20 has is an alumnus totaling 415 graduates of the Leadership program over the past two decades. That is a wonderful array of human talent and capital spread around the Clermont County community.

In an effort to keep our mailing list current and our contact info accurate, we have made efforts to contact our alum and see what they are doing. We have also inquired as to what (if any) leadership roles they are involved in. It has been gratifying to note that almost two-thirds of our graduates are engaged in a leadership role or roles. This includes coaching youth teams, boy scout & girl scout troop leaders, church committees, school boards or PTA organizations, planning & zoning, board of zoning appeals, land use planning committees, levy committees, veterans affairs, voter registrations, chambers of commerce, park & recreation boards, police, fire, EMS squads, mental health organizations, counseling centers, development initiatives, United Way, Senior Services, Boys & Girls Club, Children's Protective Services, League of Women Voters, Literacy Council, Libraries, Clermont Recovery Center, Developmental Disabilities, humane society / animal shelter school mentoring programs, suicide prevention / crisis hotline, YMCA, YWCA, homeless shelter, and I apologize for any other entities I may have missed, but you get the point.

The purpose of our Leadership program is not to just acquaint the attendees with the infrastructure and institutions of Clermont County, but to identify leadership elements, assess the strengths and skills that the LEAD class participants have and exhibit, then develop those strengths to their maximum and make the connection to Clermont County organizations. As a community, we all become the beneficiaries of these connections!

Alumni Call to Action!
We have two important events coming up in the next week.

One is the Clermont 20/20 Cornhole Tournament on Friday evening, September 10, 2010 starting at 7:00 PM at this year's Taste of Clermont. Location is the Eastgate Mall (west) parking lot area. Cost is $40 per team (2 member team). All proceeds go to our Last Dollar Grant Scholarship Fund. It is a great way to assist graduating high school seniors throughout Clermont County. As a consolation prize, Executive Director Chris Smith will award a deserving participant the designation of honorary Kernel in the Cornhole Brigade!

The second event is the combined Clermont 20/20 & Clermont Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing on Monday September 13, 2010 at the Oasis Golf and Conference Center, 902 Loveland Miamiville Road. Clermont Chamber of CommerceBuilding a sustainable energy future is difficult in any environment, but it is especially difficult in this age of uncertainty on the economy, climate change regulations, and, in Ohio, customer choice. The Clermont Chamber invites members and other area businesses to join us for the September Monthly Membership Luncheon featuring Julie Janson, president of Duke Energy Ohio and Duke Energy Kentucky, who will share the company's vision of the future of energy.  Her role entails leading the utility's rate and regulatory initiatives in addition to managing state and local regulatory and governmental relations, economic development and community affairs.  She is responsible for 3,370 employees and operations serving more that 1.2 million gas and electric customers in Southwest Ohio and six in Northern Kentucky counties.  Janson will discuss challenges, solutions and updates on the issues that impact all of us, and she'll also take your questions. Cost is $25 for chamber members and $50 for non-members. Call 513-576-5000 or visit www.clermontchamber.com for reservations.

ESL/ESOL Volunteers

The Literacy CouncilThe Literacy Council announces a unique volunteer opportunity working with ESL/ESOL adult students on the campus of UC Clermont.  Students are enrolled in a basic level English class and need additional educational assistance.  The Literacy Council has teamed up with the classroom instructor to provide tutoring support.  Tutors are needed during the actual class time: Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.  University of Cincinnati classes run on a 10-week quarter, so this volunteer opportunity would be limited.  This session begins on Thursday, September 23, 2010.  Parking is free on UC-Clermont campus. For information on how to volunteer for this tutoring assignment, please call or email Joy Brown - 513-943-3742, or joy.brown@clermontbrownliteracy.org.

GCF helps with Clermont Senior Services New Kitchen
The new kitchen facility is opening for production on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 on the campus of Clermont Senior Services on James E. Sauls Drive.  This becomes the permanent home for the Meals on Wheels program in Clermont County.  It replaces the temporary space at the old Williamsburg High School which has served the program since 1998. The lease with the school expired in 2008 and Clermont Senior Services has been on a monthly rental since then.

"We've had a wonderful relationship with the school, but the district just isn't sure what the long-term plans are for that building. We didn't want to put ourselves in a position where the district decided to sell the building and we didn't have a place for the kitchen," said George Brown, Executive Director for Clermont Senior Services.

Milacron donated 1.5 acres of land adjacent to the Clermont Senior Services property.  This provided space for the new kitchen to be built.  Funding for the project included a $60,000 capital grant from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.  An additional $50,000 Community Development Block Grant was made possible by the Clermont County Commissioners.  The majority of the funding is through a USDA Rural Development loan.

The Meals on Wheels program serves over 1,000 older adults in Clermont County.  It is funded by the Clermont Senior Services levy, with support from the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, the Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio, and donations from meal recipients.
